City of Blairsville
Blairsville, the county seat of Union County, was incorporated on December 26, 1835, and remains the sole incorporated community in the county. Blairsville was named for Francis Preston Blair, Sr. from Kentucky, editor of the Washington Globe. At the heart of downtown is the Historic Union County
Courthouse, constructed in 1899, and nearby is City Hall, the former jail. Both are on the National Register of Historic Places. Within the city limits are 130-acre Meeks Park and 18-hole Butternut Creek Golf Course.
Today Blairsville's Town Square is frequently the venue for community events. The Old Courthouse has museum exhibits, seminars and concerts provided by the Historical Society. Just south of the Square, the Society developed and maintains the Mountain Life Museum. In 2007 Blairsville was recognized as a Georgia Better Hometown, largely due to the community volunteer efforts of the Downtown Development Authority of Blairsville.
Nearly two-thirds of Union County is in the Chattahoochee National Forest. It includes Georgia's highest point, Brasstown Bald with a visitors' center at the summit; Vogel State Park, the oldest and most popular state park; and the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway. Blairsville received the official designation as an "Appalachian Trail Community" with the Walasi-Yi Mountain Crossing located in Union County.
